MAKHACHKALA — A police spokeswoman says a journalist in Russia’s North Caucasus has been killed after repeated threats and an attempt on his life.
Fatina Ubaidatova, police spokeswoman in Dagestan, said Tuesday that Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev, an editor at the local weekly newspaper critical of authorities, was killed in his car Tuesday morning by unknown attackers outside his home.
Akhmednabiyev survived an attempt on his life in January.
Dagestan, in the North Caucasus, has become the epicenter of violence with Islamist rebels targeting police and other officials in near-daily shootings and bombings, making it one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work in Russia.
Akhmednabiyev’s name was on a list of militants and their “accomplices” that has been released since 2009 by anonymous authors vowing to avenge killed security forces.
