Green Lancers crushed by Romania

THE UNIVERSITY of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers-powered Philippine team suffered greatly in its first game after the Nationals were routed by Romania, 58-106, in men’s basketball of the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia, yesterday.

According to assistant coach Van Halen Parmis, the first period was a close one but UV slipped steadily, which allowed Romania to go up, 40-24, at halftime.

It was all downhill from there as the Green Lancers were outmatched by their taller and heftier opponents, which caused foul trouble among the big men of UV.

Parmis also added that the team was still adapting to the cold weather in Russia.

John Abad led the nine-time Cesafi champions with 19 points while Vincent Mendoza had 13.  Reigning Cesafi MVP Wowie Escosio had 13.

Roland Torok led Romania with 17 while Adrian Gutoaia chipped in with 15. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
