Sevillano, six others stay unbeaten in U16 tilt

CEBUANO chess phenom Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano and six other junior wood pushers remained unbeaten after three rounds in the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) Under 16 Rapid Chess Tournament at the Deep Blue Cafe at the SM City Cebu.

Sevillano defeated Jethro Ysmael Claro in the third round of the scheduled seven-round rapid Swiss system tournament to tally 3.0 points.

Tying Sevillano in the top spot were siblings Chris Aldritz and Christian Klent Pondoyo along with Jeremy Pepito, Felix Shaun Balbona, Jeffu Durug and Ryan Pacres.

Meanwhile, James Andrew Balbona, John Arvert Cadiz, Edel Vosotros and Glexan Derotas all have 2.5 points to share second place in the standings.

In the girls’ side, Vic Glyzen Derotas and three other female junior wood pushers logged three wins to share the lead.

Derotas nipped Cherry Mae Caballes in the third round.

Also with 3.0 points are Sheila Mae Diloy, Shyna Gwyneth Claro and Laila Camel Nadera.

Jeremy Rose Bajo and Alphecca Gonzales are tied at second place with 2.5 points while 14 other female wood pushers claimed two wins after the first three rounds.

The remaining four rounds will be competed today.

The winners here will represent Cebu City in the Batang Pinoy National Finals later this year.
