MANILA, Philippines – Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II said there is nothing wrong if his subordinate aspires for the top post in the Sandiganbayan.

Roxas’ subordinate, Interior Undersecretary Rafael Santos, during public interview with members of the Judicial and Bar Council, said his decision to seek a post in the Judiciary has Roxas’ blessing.

“I will not be a hindrance to his dream of joining the Judiciary,” Roxas told reporters Wednesday after the Justice Sector Coordinating Council gathering.

Roxas said Santos’ record is unblemished and that the latter is qualified for the anti-graft court post.

“His record will speak for itself. He’s… willing to serve,” Roxas said.

Critics said Santos’ open admission during his JBC public interview may have cast doubts on his impartiality should he be chosen to assume the Sandiganbayan top post.

The JBC is constitutionally mandated to screen applicants to the judiciary and Ombudsman.

On July 29, the JBC will vote for a shortlist of candidates to the top Sandiganbayan post. The shortlist will be submitted to President Benigno Aquino III to make the final choice.
