NDRRMC: ‘Gorio’ left 7 dead

MANILA, Philippines – Contrary to earlier reports of zero casualties from tropical storm “Gorio” (international name Rumbia), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Tuesday said seven people were killed from the weather disturbance.

The seven fatalities were from a boat that capsized in Concepcion, Iloilo on Saturday afternoon. They were identified as Redan Rico, Justin Rico, Aurea Rico, Rachelle Rico, Paulo Canete, Hanz Christopher Canete and Jenia Canete.

Eight were rescued from the sea tragedy.

Meanwhile, four were injured from tornado incident in Jomalig, Quezon.

On Sunday, the NDRRMC declared that Gorio left no casualty, despite making seven landfalls in parts of Eastern Visayas and Southern Luzon over the weekend.

Gorio left the Philippine area of responsibility early Monday, affecting nearly 3,600 persons in Mimaropa, Bicol and Eastern Visayas.

Major Rey Balido, NDRRMC spokesman, told reporters that the report only arrived the Office of Civil Defense in Region 6 Monday afternoon and still needed to be validated.

The government has allotted P149 million worth of emergency relief resources.
