DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines—A local newspaper publisher, who is one of the accused in the 2012 murder of a Pangasinan mayor, was shot and wounded by one of three men on a motorcycle in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, on Tuesday morning, police said.

A field report from the Sta. Barbara police said Jaime Aquino, publisher of the weekly Northern Star, was shot at 7:10 a.m. while he was reading a newspaper in a waiting shed in Barangay Menien West.

Aquino ran toward his  car but was hit in the back. He was taken to the Villaflor Hospital here.

Early this year, Aquino, Governor Amado Espino Jr. and Pangasinan Representative Jesus Celeste were charged with murder in connection with the killing of Infanta Mayor Ruperto Martinez in December 2012.
