37 provinces under storm signal

MANILA, Philippines—At least 37 areas were placed under storm signals in Luzon and Visayas after Tropical Storm “Gorio” made landfall in Hernani, Eastern Samar, the state weather bureau said Saturday.

Signal No. 2, with 61-100 kilometers per hour winds, was hoisted over Masbate (including Ticao, Burias Islands), Sorsogon, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Marinduque, Quezon (including Polilio Island), Samar Provinces, Biliran and Leyte, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Signal No.1 was raised  in Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bataan, Bulacan, Zambales, Tarlac, La Union, Benguet, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Pangasinan , Metro Manila, Southern Leyte, Capiz, Aklan Northeastern Iloilo , Northern Cebu, Camotes Island and Bantayan Island.

Gorio was last observed 30 kilometers southeast of Catbalogan, Samar with maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of to 80 kph. It moved northwest at 19 kph, Pagasa said.

Moderate to heavy rains were seen forecast from Gorio. Residents in low lying and mountainous areas with storm signals were alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone, Pagasa also said.

Gorio was forecast to be in the vicinity of Alabat,Quezon  by Sunday morning; 170 km east of Dagupan City by Monday morning; and 370 km east of Sinait, Ilocos Sur by Monday evening.
