MANILA, Philippines—A child was killed and two others were injured when fire gutted a shanty community in Caloocan City Wednesday night, an official said Thursday.

The fatality was identified as Mark Joshua Sabado, 2, who was left inside his house while two others—Sonny Espiritu, 40; and Josefina Benitez, 78—suffered minor burns and suffocation, said Fire Officer 2 Noel Soriano.

Soriano said more than a dozen families were displaced by the fire that burned down 15 makeshift houses in Asistio Street, 7th Avenue in Caloocan City shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

He said damage to property was estimated at P1 million but added that investigators have yet to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
