MANILA, Philippines — A low pressure area moved closer to Mindanao and may intensify into a tropical depression that will be named “Gorio”, the state weather bureau said Thursday.

The LPA  was last observed 500 kilometers east of Surigao City and was embedded along the intertropical convergence zone affecting Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

Should it intensify into a tropical depression, it will be locally named “Gorio.”

“Eastern and Central Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms,” Pagasa said.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Light to moderate winds blowing from the northeast to northwest will prevail over Visayas and Mindanao and coming from the southeast to southwest over Luzon. The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be slight to moderate. Frances Mangosing
