Cuello 5 lbs over limit, but coach not worried
World title challenger Denver ‘The Excitement’ Cuello (33W-4L-6D, 21 KOs) has wrapped up his training target of 112 rounds of sparring for his world title bout against WBC minimumweight champion Xiong Zhao Zhong (20W-4L-1D, 11 KOs) of China on Friday, June 28 in Dubai.
Promoter Aljoe Jaro informed Cebu Daily News via e-mail that Cuello sparred with stablemate Lionel Legada at the KO Gym in Dubai for four rounds in his final session last weekend. He proceeded to hit the punch mitts and pound the heavy bag. Team Cuello also reviewed their battle plan for this all-important fight.
Jaro also informed that Cuello and Zhong were weighed by a WBC official for the seven-day pre-fight stipulated weight inside the KO Gym. Denver weighed 110lbs, the exact target for 7 days weight limit before the fight prescribed by the WBC while Zhong was lighter at 109lbs.
Jaro is confident Denver will not have any trouble making the 105 lbs division during the official weigh-in one day before the fight. Cuello is the WBC number one contender and mandatory challenger.
Cuello, who hails from Iloilo, also made a guest appearance in Dubai’s Filipino night club CLUB 7 which drew members of the Filipino community who mobbed him for photos and autographs. He also gave away free tickets to lucky fans who promised to support him in his first world title attempt.
