10 hurt as bus falls into ravine in Quezon
LUCENA CITY, Philippines—At least 10 persons were injured when a Manila-bound bus fell into a gully along the Quirino Highway in Tagkawayan, Quezon, shortly after midnight on Friday, police said.
Chief Inspector William Angway, Tagkawayan police chief, said as the Peñafrancia bus was negotiating a descent in Barangay San Vicente at 12:10 a.m., driver Gonzalo Joble, 65, made a swerve to avoid ploughing into a newly concreted section of the road and this led him to lose control of the vehicle.
Police said the wayward bus fell into a 12-foot ravine and overturned.
Residents living along the highway immediately texted the Tagkawayan police station, which dispatched policemen and volunteer rescuers and medical team.
The injured passengers were taken to the Maria Eleazar Memorial District Hospital in Tagkawayan for treatment.
Angway said the bus was carrying 27 passengers.
