Unthinkable depravity

Mario Antonio, one of three labor officials linked to a sex scandal in the Middle East, has appealed to the public not to prejudge him and wait instead for the results of the investigation being conducted by the labor department and Department of Foreign Affairs.

Antonio allegedly forced into prostitution female domestic workers who ran away from their Arab employers and sought refuge at the Philippine Embassy in Jordan.

“The allegations are not true and may be the work of recruitment agencies and traffickers we crossed in protecting [our migrant workers],” Antonio told reporters at the Overseas Workers Welfare Office in Pasay City.

Cow dung! Why would female domestic workers he helped accuse him of being a pimp?

If Antonio helped those workers  go back to the Philippines—which is his job as overseas welfare officer—the beneficiaries of his kindness would have praised, instead of denounced him.

It is against human nature to bite the hand that feeds him. Only snakes are supposed to do that.

The government should throw everything at Antonio and his cohorts in the Middle East, including the kitchen sink, for exploiting beleaguered female compatriots they were supposed to help.

Their depravity is unthinkable!

Let’s pray that when they come back to the country, the relatives of their victims would not want to take revenge on them.

Gabriela party-list Rep. Luz Ilagan is riding on the hot issue of exploitation of female workers in embassy refugee centers which was exposed by another party-list representative, Walden Bello.

There goes Gabriela again, riding on another popular issue while ignoring other women in distress because they’re not celebrities.

It’s surprising why Gabriela continues to be trusted by ordinary womenfolk.

A five-story structure on busy Santolan Road in Quezon City attracts motorists not because of its beauty but due to its ugliness.

The structure at 235 Santolan Rd. looks like an airport control tower and is made of hollow blocks.

I am told the owner of the building, Mario Diaz, a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW), built it without securing a permit from the Building Official’s office.

It was a two-story building at first which was okay, but then Diaz apparently decided he wanted his house to tower over the other structures in the neighborhood.

The additional three floors were built by laborers in the neighborhood without the benefit of engineering expertise.

A fairly strong earthquake may likely send the structure tumbling down like a house of cards.

A politician and his wife are viciously attacking the former mayor of a Northern Luzon city who lies sick and helpless in a hospital.

The wife plans to run for mayor of the city in 2016.

The attacks stem from the sale of a city property to a Manila-based business group which the politician and his wife opposed.

The politician and his wife are allies of the new leadership.

A decent man doesn’t kick an opponent who’s already down.

And to think that the politician is reputed to have a sunny disposition.
