The reigning champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons finally found their fire in the second half and they utilized this to crush the Don Bosco Greywolves, 92-59, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Dragons looked like shadows of themselves in the first half as they struggled on both ends of the floor and found themselves trailing, 12-19, after the opening canto.
That trend continued in the ensuing period as the Greywolves got contributions from everybody on the bench and led, 36-31 at halftime.
However, CEC awoke from their slumber and spewed fire in the third period as they outscored their opponents, 29-14.
The Dragons hustled on defense, which resulted in easy baskets and the rout that was expected from the get-go was certainly on.
Jay Roxas, Alfred Sedillo and Lyle Sumayang combined to score 20 of their 29 points in that stretch to push the Dragons to a 60-50 lead heading to the final frame.
Sedillo, CEC’s much-heralded rookie, finished the job off as he scored 12 more in the fourth stanza to ensure the Dragons’ second win in three games.
He ended up with 26 points, a fitting follow-up to his 25-point performance against the University of San Carlos last weekend.
Sumayang, CEC’s veteran center, added 17 while Roxas, a bullstrong power forward, chipped in 10.
Don Bosco got 11 from Stephen Nierre but got little else from the rest of the squad as nobody else reached double figures.
