Female transport leader gunned down in QC

MANILA, Philippines—A female leader of a jeepney drivers’ association was shot dead by an unidentified gunman while she and another transport leader were waiting for a ride along Edsa in Quezon City Monday afternoon.

Cristina Venturina, 56, was with Leyte de Guzman waiting for a jeepney under a pedestrian bridge at the corner of Edsa and Oliveros St. in Barangay Apolonio Samson when she was shot multiple times by the assailant at around 5:50 p.m. Monday.

De Guzman, who was unhurt, rushed Venturina to the Manila Central University Hospital but the victim died at 6:30 p.m. while receiving treatment.

Case investigator SPO1 Cristituto Zaldarriaga said Venturina, a Caloocan City resident, was a local leader of the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines.

De Guzman, on the other hand, headed a different FEJODAP chapter, police learned.

De Guzman told police that a man in a black jacket approached them from behind, fired several shots at Venturina then fled the scene.

Police are looking into the possibility that the killing is linked to Venturina’s role in the transport sector, Zaldarriaga said.
