LPA off Surigao City intensifies into tropical depression—Pagasa

The low pressure area (LPA) estimated east of Surigao City has developed into a tropical depression and was named “Emong,” the state weather bureau said Sunday afternoon.

In its 5:00 p.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the center of Tropical Depression Emong was estimated at 370 kilometers east of Catarman, Northern Samar as of 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

It was packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and was moving north northwest at 9 kilometers per hour, Pagasa said.

According to Pagasa, Emong is still far to directly affect any part of the country, however, it will bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

It also added that the tropical depression is likely to intensify within the next 24-48 hours.
