Beefed up Southwestern University downs NCAA’s Mapua

The souped-up Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras debuted in style as they beat the Mapua Cardinals, 75-68, in the Mayor Mike Rama Invitational Cup yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Adam Mohammed led the Cobras with 19 points while Landry Sanjo added 14. Prized acquisition Mark Jayven Tallo finished with 11 points.

Kenneth Ighalo led Mapua with 14 markers.

After a close first half, the reigning Cesafi champions broke the game wide open with a 14-4 run at the end of the third that netted them a 66-50 lead.

Tallo dazzled his opponents and the crowd with this fancy ball-handling skills and explosive scoring ability as he anchored that run along with import Sanjo and Francis Ortega, whose three-pointer ended the third with a bang.

Meanwhile, the first game saw the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws turn on their jets early to bury the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 90-83.

The Tamaraws established the pace and tempo in the first canto where they led, 27-14.

Although the Lancers tried to come close several times, the Tamaraws kept them at bay behind a balanced scoring attack led by Mike Tolomia’s 20.

Star guard Terrence Romeo had 16 while Cebuanos Roger Pogoy and Raymar Jose combined for 25.

UV was paced by the 19 of Partner’s Cup MVP John Abad. Franz Arong tallied 13 while Mike Harry and Chris Perolino each added 11.
