The University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors put the confidence and momentum that they gained from their win over the fancied Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras to good use as they overwhelmed the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 86-66, in the seniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. basketball tournament last Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Desspite playing the night before and coming away with a thrilling 65-63 win over the Cobras, the Warriors showed no signs of letting down as they demolished the Wildcats right from the get-go en route to their second straight victory in the tournament.
Miko Santos had 12 points, Sam Hermosa ended up with 11 while Cid Cortes added 10 for the Warriors.
Hermosa and Mike Cantonao led a balanced offensive in the first quarter that gave the Warriors a 29-6 lead.
However, the Wildcats, who played without injured star player Chester Curso, fought right back and rattled in 22 points against USC’s 11, including a stretch where they scored 10 unanswered points to trim the deficit down to just 12, 28-40, at halftime.
But that was as close as the wards of head coach Gilbert Demape would get as the Warriors leaned on the surprise contributions of Santos, who contributed 12 points in the third period alone that helped give USC a 66-40 lead heading to the final frame.
In the other seniors game of that afternoon, the woes of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars continued as they fell to their third straight defeat, this time to the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 63-73.
