Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants a total facelift of the Taboan Public Market.
During his visit yesterday, Mayor Rama instructed City Administrator Jose Marie Poblete to make Taboan Public Market a “showcase.”
The City Hall has allocated P25 million for the market’s renovation to include the reconstruction of the modules around the market, re-roofing and fencing the building.
Rama said he wanted to beautify the market, so that no senior citizen will stumble, no child will accidentally fall in a manhole, have a garden and establish a parking area.
He also said he wants to prohibit vendors or anybody to sleep in the market so that it will not attract informal settlers.
“I want Taboan to be senior citizen-friendly, children-friendly and environment-friendly,” Rama said.
During his visit the mayor stopped vendors from erecting any structures like gates and partitiions.
Rama said he wanted to pursue the repainting of the market building and continue the clearing of the area for the establishment of the parking area.
“We will be doing things phase by phase because if we target to do it all, we might end up doing nothing,” he said. /Jeanymae Ardiente, CNU Intern
