Prisoners to feature ‘Iwas Dengue’ drive

08:18 AM June 09, 2013

CPDRC’s dancing inmates will dance with Assistant Health Secretary Eric Tayag to kick off the Health Department’s Iwas Dengue campaign on June 15.
Tayag will be in Cebu to start the campaign as Cebu has one of the highest recorded dengue cases in the country.
He said the Department of Health would launch its ASEAN Dengue Day, which is an international event promoting public awareness to prevent dengue.
The CPDRC inmates yesterday rehearsed with Tayag, as they danced to a song composed for the health department’s anti-dengue campaign.
“The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness to the public. Para din maipakita ng Cebu ang magagandang hakbang na ginagawa dito sa Cebu para iwasan ang dengue,” Tayag said.
Tayag said that the increase of dengue cases in the country this year was mostly recorded in the Visayas and Mindanao.
four o’ clock habit
He said that it would be possible that cases in Cebu would increase especially with the continuous rains.
He cited last year, the City Health Department declared a dengue outbreak in 25 barangays in Cebu City where 2,108 dengue cases were reported with 10 dengue-related deaths.
As part of the campaign, they are encouraging the public as well as local government units to continue to follow the four o’ clock habit, which designates 4 p.m. as the anti-dengue hour.
Students are also advised to wear “dengue uniform”–long sleeves, pants or skirts which would cover the legs, and light-colored uniforms as dark colored clothes attract mosquitoes./Correspondent Joy C. Quito
