The late boxing promoter and manager Lope “Papa” Sarreal was the father-in-law of Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, the country’s junior lightweight champion. Sarreal, known as the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Boxing,” produced 22 world champions, including Elorde who married his daughter Laura. Sarreal is credited with introducing big-time boxing in Korea, Thailand and Japan and opening the Asian market to pro boxing. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005.
