Woman, baby drown as boat capsizes in Manila Bay

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—A woman and her granddaughter drowned after boat capsized in Manila Bay Wednesday afternoon, police said Thursday.

Precilla Viscarra, 52, was carrying 11-month-old Trisha Mae when they took a boat ride from their residence in Barangay (village) Manuyo 1 in Las Piñas City to the neighboring village of Longos in Bacoor, Cavite, at around 1 p.m.

But on their way, the small wooden fishing boat capsized due to strong winds and waves. The victims were immediately pulled out of water but died minutes later, said Bacoor police Chief Superintendent Edgardo Roquero.

“Residents in that area usually ride (fishing) boats because they are faster and to avoid the traffic,” Roquero said, adding the boat ride only took five minutes.

The police have yet to determine the number of people on the boat and were looking for the boat’s operator for questioning.
