The Philippine Azkals made history by defeating Hong Kong for the first time, 1-0, in the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) international friendly held at the Mong Kok Stadium in Hong Kong last night.
James Younghusband scored the Philippines’ lone goal via a header in the 33rd minute.
Hong Kong has defeated the Philippines in seven of their eight previous meetings prior to last night’s game. The Philippines settled for a 3-3 draw in its last game against Hong Kong in 2011.
Hong Kong had 18 goal attempts against the Filipinos’ seven but Philippine goalkeeper Neil Etheridge erected a solid wall around the Azkals’ goal to frustrate the hosts./CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
