BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya — An official of a state university here was shot and killed by two men inside the campus while she was on her way to work at around 7:20 a.m. Monday, police said.
Senior Supt. Elmer Beltejar, Nueva Vizcaya police director, said Arlene Mailig Fernandez, budget officer of the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), was shot and killed while she was on board a tricycle going to the university’s administration building in Barangay Salvacion here.
“Our initial assessment is that [the motive for the killing] could be job-related,” Beltejar said.
Investigation showed that Fernandez was walking to her office at the NVSU administration building as she got out of the staff quarters inside the campus but she later decided to hail a tricycle.
One of the suspects, armed with a .45 cal. Gun, shot Fernandez as the tricycle she rode reached a street corner. His companion served as a lookout.
Both men later commandeered another tricycle and fled.
Fernandez, who sustained five bullet wounds in the body, died while being taken to the Veterans’ Regional Hospital here, Beltejar said.
