TMX plants mangroves in Liloan

Timex Philippines and the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. (CCEF) partnered in mangrove-planting activity in sitio Solima, barangay Cotcot, Liloan town, northern Cebu recently.

The activity was in observance with Earth Day celebration. Every year since 2009, Timex supports CCEF’s Adopt-A-Mangrove project to mark the Earth Day celebration.

The project involves the planting of mangroves in reforested areas in the different municipalities in Cebu, such as Aloguinsan, Barili, Bantayan, Borbon, Cordova, Dalaguete, Lapu-lapu City, Liloan, Medellin, Moalboal, Naga, Sibonga, Talisay City and Tuburan.

Lawyer Rose Liza Osorio, CCEF executive director, praised Timex and the local officials and volunteers of barangay Cotcot for their involvement in the cause of environmental preservation.

Osorio said “We need to safeguard this natural inheritance for our children and the future generations.”

Over a hundred employees of Timex joined barangay residents and volunteers to plant 2,500 bongalon mangroves seedlings in CCEF’s pilot site in sitio Solima.

The theme of this year’s 43rd Earth Day celebration is “The face of climate change.”

Analeh Patindol, coordinator of the Adopt-A-Mangrove project, emphasized the need to sustain the growth of the mangrove trees planted. According to her, the mangrove planting site is monitored regularly by the Bantay Dagat watchers in Cotcot.

The CCEF’s Adopt-A-Mangrove project covers two hectares of land to be planted with 10,000 seedlings each every year.

It is an offshoot of the “One Million Mangroves for Cebu” program of the Cebu provincial government.
