Brothers sought in teenager’s killing

THE MARIKINA police are hunting down two brothers believed to be responsible in the killing of a 16-year-old boy and the wounding of a woman with an improvised gun on Sunday night. Senior Supt. Gabriel Lopez, Marikina police chief, said Tuesday that Ramir and Robin Catiis, residents of Barangay Malanday, Marikina, were being sought for the murder of their neighbor identified as Eduardo Balanes. Initial investigation showed that Balanes, a student, was walking on Kabayani Road in Malanday at around 10 p.m. on Sunday when the brothers shot him in the chest with a “sumpak,” a makeshift gun. Loyda Mirabueno, 29, who happened to be walking on the same road saw the shooting and shouted for help. Hoping to silence the woman, one of the Catiis brothers shot her in the abdomen, police said. Bystanders rushed the two to St. Victoria Hospital in Marikina City where Balanes was pronounced dead on arrival. Lopez said murder and frustrated homicide charges had been filed against the brothers with the city prosecutor’s office. The motive in the killing was still unknown but according to Lopez, there may have been bad blood between the victim and the brothers. Niña Calleja and Diosa Quiñones
