Cuello’s world title fight set June 28
Denver “The Excitement” Cuello (33-4-6, 21 KOs) will challenge WBC minimumweight world champion Xiong Zhao Zhong (20W-4L-1D, 11 KOs) of China on June 28 in Dubai.
Promoter Aljoe Jaro informed Cebu Daily News that their long wait is finally over and that both camps have signed the contracts and only the specific venue in Dubai needs to be finalized.
Denver who also fights under the name Cuello Singwangcha to honor his Thai sponsor Naris Singwangcha, will also have to comply with the medical requirements including keeping his weight in check. Cuello will have to be at 115 lbs 30 days before the fight. But this will not be problem according to Jaro. The weight limit for the strawweight or minimumweight division is 105 lbs.
Denver is also training hard and sparring with IBF Asia Pacific flyweight champion Ryan Rey Ponteras.
Cuello, a southpaw from Iloilo, has been the mandatory challenger for a year already. He was requested to step aside to pave the way for a WBC world title fight in China. In Cuello’s last fight, he won by majority decision over Japanese Takashi Kunishige last April 7 in Osaka.
Zhong on the other hand, won the vacant title last November in China by unanimous decision over Javier Martinez Resendiz of Mexico.
