MANILA, Philippines—As the election period culminated Saturday, Senator-elect Nancy Binay called on to the public, including his critics, to work together in doing what needs to be done for the country.
“Tapos na ang eleksyon, magsama-sama na tayo (The election is over, let’s work together),” Binay said in an impromptu interview after she was proclaimed by the Commission on Elections sitting as the National Board of Canvassers along with four other winning bets.
During the last few weeks of the campaign period, Binay’s critics have intensified their attacks on her, even going as far as making fun of her complexion.
Just recently, Binay’s Wikipedia profile was manipulated. It said Binay “comes from a dynasty” in the Philippines and is professionally known as “Noggie” or a black person.
It also said that she played administrative duties such as making coffee and being a personal assistant to her mother, Dr. Elenita, who was then Mayor of Makati.
Moreover, it said that Binay was “married to a white American who is a construction and real-estate businessman with whom she has four children, all Dalmatians.”
“Sabi ko nga kalaban ng UNA ay ang kahirapan, kawalan ng trabaho. Umasa kayo na talagang pagtutuunan ko nang oras paano tayo makakatulong sa ating mga kababayan (Like what I said, the opponent of UNA is poverty, lack of job opportunities. Have faith that I will focus more time how we’re we going to help our countrymen),” she said, adding that she is thankful that she got elected despite all the attacks on her.
Binay said she will first concentrate on project related to the welfare of children.
Binay was supposed to be proclaimed Thursday but chose not to attend saying she wanted to wait until every vote has been counted.
With the poll body closing its session Sunday evening with all local certificates of canvass counted, Binay said she is satisfied and won’t question the Comelec anymore.
