Cop gunned down in Quezon City

MANILA—A policeman going home from work on Thursday night in Quezon City was gunned down by motorcycle-riding assailants, who also shot and wounded two other persons, one of whom had tried to stop them, police said.

Case investigator Police Officer 2 Jogene Hernandez said PO2 Jayson Aragon, a resident of Kaunlaran Street in Barangay (village) Commonwealth, was dead on arrival at a hospital. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Hernandez.

Aragon, who was assigned at the Philippine National Police’s Regional Office 4-A, was going home on his motorcycle and had stopped by a store on Kamagong Street in his neighborhood when he was attacked.

Hernandez said that while Aragon was hanging around at the store two men on a motorcycle also stopped by the store. One of them suddenly opened fire on Aragon, who soon fell under a hail of gunfire.

The gunmen then sped away on their motorcycle but a bystander, Raymart Cadsawan, 22, tried to block  their path but one of the assailants shot him twice in the abdomen, Hernandez said, adding that another bystander,  Rolando Herado, 29, was hit on the left leg by a stray bullet.

Aragon was rushed to the Fairview General Hospital but he did not make it.

Hernandez said he found out in his investigation that Aragon had been involved in a shootout in his neighborhood a few years ago with a suspected gun for hire. The alleged hitman was killed by responding officers from the Batasan Hills police station.

Aragon’s family told police investigators that strangers had been in the neighborhood, asking about Aragon’s whereabouts.
