Friday, May 10, is the 129th birth anniversary of Maria Paz Mendoza-Guanzon. Born in Pandacan, Manila, she was a woman of many firsts. She was among the first Filipino women to acquire a high school diploma and receive a medical degree from the University of the Philippines. She was also the first woman member of the university’s Board of Regents. A pathologist, she was known for her pioneering work in the study of “bangungot.” Married to fellow doctor Potenciano Guanzon, she died of a heart attack on March 10, 1967.
