ILOILO CITY—A hand grenade exploded in front of the house of former Justice secretary Raul Gonzalez in this city early Thursday morning.

No one was reported hurt but the blast damaged a concrete flower box along the road fronting the house of Gonzalez in Barangay (village) Quitin Salas in Jaro District, according to Chief Inspector Gilbert Gorero, Jaro police chief.

Gorero said the grenade exploded around 1:30 a.m., about four meters from the gate of the former government official’s house.

Police recovered a safety lever and coil spring of an M26A1 fragmentation grenade.

Investigators were still determining the identities and motive of those behind the grenade-throwing.

Gonzalez’s son and namesake former Iloilo Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. is running for his former post under the United Nationalist Alliance against reelectionist Rep. Jerry Trenas.
