MMDA chief ‘surprised’ over SC ruling on extended liquor ban

MANILA, Philippines—Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino said he was surprised by the Supreme Court decision to stop the implementation of the extended liquor ban.

“I am surprised by the legal turn of events considering the noble purpose of our proposal to lessen election related violence, not to mention road accidents,” Tolentino said in a statement posted on the MMDA’s official Twitter account but added that he, nonetheless, respected the high tribunal ruling.

The Commission on Elections ordered that the nationwide liquor ban be extended to five days from May 9 to 11.

Tolentino said the extended liquor ban was a good step to help reduce road accidents, electoral violence for “a more sober and meaningful discussion of electoral issues.”
