THE SACRED Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles showcased their intent to once again contend for the crown as they waylaid the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors, 90-56, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
In what was considered to be remarkable development, the Magis Eagles, in just their second season in the league, made it all the way to the finals last season but got swept by the eventual champions, Cebu Eastern College Dragons.
Now with their players on the cusp of fulfilling their potential, the Magis Eagles started their campaign off on a high note as they dominated their much-smaller opponents from the opening tip until the final buzzer.
With Julius Cadavis and Patrick Go hitting six points each, Ateneo de Cebu grabbed a 25-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of action. Then, they turned things up another notch as they went on a blistering 13-0 run at the start of the ensuing period with shots being made by Dawn Ochea and Jair Igna. The Magis Eagles ended the first half up by 23, 44-21.
The second half proved to be as much a formality as the Magis Eagles continued to dominate, specifically down low where Cadavis and Ochea had their way.
The lead reached a high of 36, 75-39, after Ateneo de Cebu started the fourth period with a 12-2 blast.
Jorine Cercado led the winners with 14 while Ochea and Cadavis each had 12 markers. Correspondent Jonas Panerio
