1 dead, 6 hurt as mayoral bets’ supporters clash in Pagudpud

LAOAG CITY, Philippines — A firefight between supporters of mayoral candidates in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, erupted in that town on Tuesday afternoon, the police said.
Initial reports said one man was killed while at least six others were reported wounded in the clash that broke out in Barangay (village) Poblacion 2 before 3 p.m.
Police have yet to identify the victims, said to be supporters of reelectionist Mayor Matilde Sales and her rival, Marlon Sales, younger brother of her husband, Reynolan.
Reports said the violence erupted when the rival groups crossed paths while campaigning. Reports did not say what started the confrontation.
The victims were taken to the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital in this city, some 50 kilometers from Pagudpud.
