REPRESENTATIVES of the Department of Natural Resources (DENR-7) and the Parks and Playground commissioners as well as researchers recently checked on the health of trees in Plaza Independencia and the Fuente Osmeña rotunda in Cebu City, and those in the President Carlos P. Garcia Park in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
The researchers and DENR representatives were participants of the Ecosystems Research and Development Services (EDRS) where they were training on how to assess and rehabilitate selected species in parks and roadside in Central Visayas.
The project was undertaken in Cebu and Bohol which were its pilot areas.
ERDS REPORT
Based on the report released by the ERDS, 51 trees were assessed in Plaza Independencia, 63 trees in Osmena Rotunda Park, and 212 trees composed of 18 species in President Carlos P. Garcia Park, Bohol province.
The study showed that trunk decay and stem gall were the most common tree defects which could expose park goers to risks.
Dr. Isabelo R. Montejo, DENR regional executive director, said these activities especially the tree rehabilitation would be important to preserve and improve the health condition and functionality of the trees.
“Aside from preserving the trees themselves, another purpose of the project is to lessen chances of damage to properties, casualties or injuries that may result from accidental fall of any trees or any of its branches,” Montejo added. /Correspondent Renan Alangilan
