Coach says Banilad smashers need funds for more exposure

/ 08:05 AM May 01, 2013

AFTER their dominance in the badminton event in last week’s 2013 Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City, the multi-titled smashers of the Banilad Elementary School of Mandaue City want to compete in national tournaments or even represent the country in international events.

But coach Eddie Estoconing, the man behind the team that has already produced several multi-awarded junior badminton players, said  lack of funds is a big hindrance for the team’s  dream of competing in bigger events.

Estoconing himself wants more exposure aside from just the regional and national meets.

“We maybe the perennial champions in CVIRAA and Palarong Pambansa but I can’t afford taking my players to Manila and other cities to compete in prestigious badminton tournaments,” said  Estoconing. “We decline invitations from organizers because we can’t afford to travel at our own expense. So we spend most of our time after the regional and national meets in practice. Exposure to tournaments, it’s a requirement that we have not met yet.”
