A 17-YEAR-OLD Universidad de Manila (UDM) student in a jealous rage allegedly shot and wounded before noon yesterday his girlfriend and classmate before turning the gun on himself inside the campus in Manila.

As a result of the incident, the Manila Police District (MPD) is looking into the possible administrative liability of the personnel in the local law enforcement unit assigned to secure the school due to alleged operational lapses.

MPD Ermita station 5 commander Supt. Felipe Cazon Jr. revealed that the incident happened at around 11:20 a.m. inside room 310 of the university located at the corner of Palma and Arroceros Streets in Ermita.
Before the incident, Cazon said, the teenage girl was with her friends inside the room when her boyfriend strode towards her, demanding a discussion between them.

The station commander pointed out that based on their initial investigation, the teenage girl apparently wanted to break up with her boyfriend which irked him. In a fit of jealous rage, the boy pulled out a revolver from his clutch bag and shot his girlfriend in the face.

He then calmly walked out of the room and was on the third floor hallway when his schoolmates heard a gunfire. Cazon said that both students were immediately rushed to the nearest hospitals for treatment.

While the Ermita station 5 investigators are looking into the shooting, the MPD General Assignment Section (GAS) is conducting a probe on the possible administrative aspect of the incident.

Lapse in security

“There is possibly a lapse in security by the members of the City Security Force (CSF) who are on duty at the time of the incident due to the fact that a student was able to smuggle in a gun inside the school,” Cazon stressed.

He pointed out that the CSF commander had initially claimed that it was impossible for a student to enter the school with a gun because of the tight security enforced by his men on the university’s gates and suggested that the revolver-wielding suspect could have “jumped a fence” to bring in the weapon.

“The MPD-GAS would have to look into that and they could also summon for questioning the suspect’s father to shed light on how the gun ended up in his son’s possession,” Cazon remarked.
