Pinoy Fareñas battles Mexican foe in non-title fight today in Texas
MICHAEL Fareñas of the Peñalosa Boxing Gym will try to bounce from his decision loss to Yuriorkis Gamboa last December when he faces Gerardo Zayas of Mexico today in a non-title Top Rank feature fight at the Frank Erwin Center, University of Texas in Austin.
During the official weigh in held one day before the fight, Fareñas tipped the scales at 132 lbs while Zayas stepped in at 132.5 lbs.
Fareñas (34W-4L-4D, 26 KOs) lost to the Cuban Gamboa in a WBA interim superfeatherweight title bout last dec. 8 in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley slambang in Las Vegas.
A victcory today will put him back on the path to another world title shot.
Zayas (19W-21L-2D, 11 KOs) lost in his attempt to win a WBC regional belt last year.
Mranwhile, promoter and former two division world champion Gerry Peñalosa informed Cebu Daily News through e-mail that Fareñas will be going for the knockout.
