TCE TACKLES Inc. and Recreative Outdoor Exchange (ROX) hopes to promote sports fishing in Cebu when it hosts the “Get Hooked Fishing: Pier Fishing Tournament” on Aug. 21 at the Porter Marina in Liloan town, northern Cebu.

The tournament will have two categories—the biggest catch and multiple catch. It is open to veteran and beginner anglers. Registration fee is pegged at P500 inclusive of the tournament jersey.

TCE Tackle Inc. director Rainier Allen Ramos Aguas together with ROX and Primer Group’s business manager Juvy de Leon spearheaded the official launching of the event at the Gerry’s Grill Ayala Center Cebu branch.

“We are here to help our local outdoor community to venture into this exciting sport,” said De Leon, who is also responsible of staging the successful Back Pack Family Run and the Columbia outdoor sports here in Cebu.

Both groups want to promote the sport here in the country since it is only popular in the USA and Malaysia. They are also aiming to strengthen their advocacy for the environment.

Aguas, a veteran fisher and also the dealer of high-end fishing rods and equipment in Cebu, has already joined major tournaments in the country, such as the Siargao International Game Fishing.

“Ang saya dun sa Siargao, tapos napaka exciting. Kaya dinala namin to dito sa Cebu para naman ma promote ito dito,” said Aguas.

According to Aguas, sport fishing is a true test of one’s patience.

De Leon is also planning to tap the Department of Tourism and the LGU’s in different municipalities in Cebu to promote this sport since this will also educate fishermen to fish the right way.

“It will boost our tourism since foreigners are very enthusiastic with this sport and it will also help our government in protecting our marine life,” said De Leon.
