MANILA, Philippines—A man was hacked to death by his own relative following an altercation in the victim’s house in Camarin, Caloocan City, according to the police.

Caloocan police identified the hacking victim as Julius Cortun, a resident of Waling-Waling Street, Barangay (village) 175 and the suspect as Francisco Ramirez.

Police reports showed the incident happened at around 8 p.m. Monday at Cortun’s house.

Police said the victim and the suspect were related but did not say how.

Investigation showed Cortun was drunk when he went berserk, forcing the suspect and a certain Diana Ramirez to try and pacify him.

Instead of calming down, Cortun hurled a cooking pot at the suspect and shouted at him: “Isa ka pa, wala ka namang maitulong sa akin pag nangangailangan ako [you can’t even help me when I’m in need].”

Enraged, Ramirez left in a huff but came back after a few minutes with a large machete and hacked Cortun several times, hitting him in the forehead, neck and shoulder.

Cortun was rushed to the Tala Hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries at around 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Police who responded to the incident failed to arrest Ramirez that night.
