Sorsogon ex-congressman Jose Solis dies

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines—Former Sorsogon Representative Jose Solis, 80, passed away here early Tuesday.

A three-term congressman representing Sorsogon’s second district before losing to Raul Lee in the 2010 gubernatorial race, Solis at the time of his death was running for representative of the second district of Sorsogon in the coming May elections.

A close ally of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo under the Lakas-CMD, Solis died while in the intensive care unit of the Estevez Memorial Hospital at 2:45 a.m., said Francisco Tumalad Jr., a member of the staff of the Philippine Information Agency in Sorsogon.

The former congressman underwent a heart bypass operation two years ago, said Tumalad.

Before joining politics, Solis was administrator of the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority.

Solis is survived by wife Flor de Guzman Solis and their children.
