Campaign coordinator of Batangas bet for Congress shot dead

BATANGAS CITY, Philippines — A campaign coordinator of a re-electionist candidate for Congress in Batangas was shot dead while on board a motorcycle traveling along San Juan town in Batangas Sunday noon, police said.

Police Officer 3 Jeremy Ambita, chief investigator of the San Juan Municipal Police Office, identified the victim as Melvin Manimtim, 37, campaign coordinator of Batangas 4th District candidate for Representative Bernadeth Sabili.

Ambita said that at 12 noon Sunday, Manimtim was on board a motorcycle traveling along Puting Buhangin village and on his way home when shot by two unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen.

“Manimtim, former head of Barangay (village) Puting Buhangin in San Juan, had just finished attending a motorcade with Sabili and was on his way home when he was shot,” said Ambita.

Ambita said Manimtim was dead on the spot while police recovered 13 spent shells of a .45-cal. pistol from the crime scene.

He said police have been investigating various angles to the crime, including local politics and other issues.
