All systems go for 6th Olango Challenge on May 11
THE PHILIPPINES Business for Social Progress (PBSP) will spearhead another edition of the Olango Challenge on May 11 at Crimson Resort and Spa in Mactan.
The Olango Challenge is the first and only open-water swimming marathon in the country that aims to raise funds that will help build more classrooms in Olango Island.
Aside from that, the event also aims to raise awareness of drowning incidents in the Philippines, which is higher compared to other nations
“It’s very important that people know how to swim even a little bit,” said Jose Antonio Aboitiz, Chairman of the Visayas Executive Committee during a press conference yesterday. “Even a little bit of comfort in the water can go a long way towards saving your life.”
Alexander Reyes, secretary of the Philippine Swimming Committee, also said swimming is an important skill to learn since we’re living in an archipelago. Moreover, the Olango Challenge promotes swimming, particularly open swimming, as a sport.
The Olango Challenge will have 6K competitive race for men and women, 2K competitive race for men and women, and 6K and 2K fun races.
Participants who will join the fun category can use goggles and any swimming aid, while those joining the competitive categories must abide FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) or the International Swimming Federation rules.
The minimum age of a participant must be 14 years old. The race starts at 11 a.m. Deadline for the registration will be on May 7 at 6 p.m. /intern Jannica Niña G. Papelleras
