Suspected car thief killed in shootout with Makati police

MANILA, Philippines – Authorities shot and killed a suspected car thief in a shootout in Makati City Wednesday morning, police said.

Chief Inspector Jenny Tecson, Southern Police District spokeswoman, said that the unidentified suspects shot it out with Regional Police Intelligence Operations Unit – Anti-Carnapping Unit (RPIOU-ANCAR) members at the parking area of the Philippine Development Alternative Foundation at Barangay (village) Pio del Pilar at around 4 a.m.

One of them was killed by police while the other suspect escaped, said Tecson.

One of the officers in the operation, Police Officer 1 Mudzil Ali Balawag, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to the Makati Medical Center, Tecson said.

Police believe that the suspects are alleged members of the “Onad” carjacking group.

They recovered a silver Ford Escape from the scene.

Meanwhile, Dang Rosulada of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Metrobase said that there was heavy traffic along Kamagong, and Pasong Tamo in Makati after the Ayala Extension Malugay road was closed because of the incident.
