MANILA, Philippines—About P400,000 worth of property were destroyed when fire gutted a shanty community in Pasig City before dawn Friday, a city fire officer said.

Fire Officer 1 Marvic Amazona said fire blazed through roughly 20 makeshift houses along West Bank Road in Barangay (village) Maybunga in Pasig City at around 2:50 a.m.

He said around 40 families were left homeless by the fire, but added that no one was injured.

The blaze reached first alarm before it was put out at 3:55 a.m.

Investigators, however, have yet to identify what caused the fire that allegedly started from the bedroom of a certain Raquel Jabay, he said.

A radio report said the same area was gutted by fire last year.
