UP Cebu hosts bloodletting

The bloodletting program hosted by the University of the Philippines Cebu campus on Aug. 5 collected 25 bags of 500ml blood from the state university’s students.

The event was organized by the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7), in cooperation with the UP Cebu-Alpha Phi Omega, Nagkahiusang Kusog sa Estudyante, Union of Progressive Students and UP Batibot.

“I donated part of my blood because I believe someone out there is in need of it more than I do,” said student Sebastian Penayes III.

“Bloodletting campaigns are regularly carried out to help patients who need blood,” said John Claire Songkip, a blood donor selection and counseling officer.

“A regular blood donor should donate blood once in every three months. Ideally, the DOH should have a supply of 200 bags every day. But the average amount of blood bags that the agency collects per day is only 20,” Songkip added.

The DOH-7 will hold another bloodletting program today at the Eversley Childs Sanitarium in barangay Jagobiao, Mandaue City.
