Celebrities, prizes add color to ‘ Kadaugan sa Mactan’

OVER P1 million in prizes plus celebrities galore will grace Lapu-Lapu City’s annual celebration of the Kadaugan sa Mactan and the Kadaugan Street Party from April 26 to 27.

Lapu-Lapu City Councilor Harry Radaza said the city government has mapped out the programs for the annual observance which they expect to draw more foreign visitors for this year.

For the Apr. 27 reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, actor Polo Ravales will play the role of Datu Lapu-Lapu while starlet Yam Concepcion and actor Troy Montero will play Reyna Bulakna and Magellan respectively.

“We invited celebrities so that the Kadaugan sa Mactan will also draw a national audience,” said Lapu-Lapu City tourism official Damian Gomez of the event to be held at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. was invited to attend the event.

Gomez said there are also plans to invite representatives of EQ Diaper Co. who made a TV commercial parodying the Battle of Mactan.

Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza earlier sent a letter to the Advertising Board of the Philippines to protest the EQ commercial.

Gomez said the tourism office will still discuss this issue with the Lapu-Lapu City Council sometime this week.

Lapu-Lapu’s Tourism Officer Hembler Mendoza said the annual festivities is being promoted extensively in online media, resulting in its growing popularity that drew in half a million in attendance last year.

Other events lined up were the Sundown Beer Run, the Reyna Bulakna Pageant and Higante contest on Apr. 26.

The Rampada Street Dance will be joined by the city’s barangays on Saturday, April 27.

The whole stretch of M. L. Quezon National Highway in between the old Mandaue-Mactan and Fernan bridges will be closed for the festivities. Correspondent Norman V. Mendoza
