WBO superbantamweight champion Nonito ‘The Filipino Flash’ Donaire and WBA superbantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux of Cuba looked sharp and ripped in a workout in front of the international media Tuesday in New York to drum up support for their upcoming world championship unification battle on April 13 (April 14 Sunday in the Philippines).
The Donaire-Rigondeaux showdown will be held at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The 30 year-old Donaire (31W-1L, 20 KOs) is also scheduled to accept his 2012 ‘Fighter of the Year’ Award during the 88th annual Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Awards Dinner Thursday night at the Capitale in New York City. He will be making the fourth defense of his title that he won by split decision last year against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. of Puerto Rico.
Donaire is also expecting a son. His wife Rachel is pregnant with their first child.
The 32 year-old Rigondeaux (11W-0L, 8 KOs), known as ‘El Chacal’ or The Jackal, is a former amateur boxing star who captured the Olympic gold medal as a bantamweight at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
He became an interim world champion in only his seventh professional bout and became a full WBA champion in his ninth pro outing when he knocked out Rico Ramos of the U.S. in six rounds last year in Las Vegas.
