MANILA, Philippines—Eight people were injured, including one now in intensive care, after the jeep they were riding in was engulfed in flames in Pasig City early Sunday morning.
According to the Pasig Traffic and Parking Management Office (TPMO), the accident happened at around 7 a.m. along the C5 flyover in Pasig City.
An owner-type jeep (DDY 379) driven by Renato Ramirez and carrying seven other passengers, and a van (DXL 647) being driven by Arcelia Regidor, were heading towards Makati in high speed when the van rammed the back of the owner-type jeep.
After the collision, the jeep suddenly burst into flames. All eight passengers got out of the burning jeep in time, but still sustained injuries.
The eight jeep passengers — Ramirez, Rolando Ladion, Noel Dompoy Sr., Melvin Gallardo, Philip Mendoza, Ariel Zaragoso, Alvin Bautista, and Joel Caballero — were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
All the victims suffered minor burns and injuries and were immediately discharged after treatment, except Mendoza, who was still at the intensive care unit of the Pasig City General Hospital, as of Sunday afternoon, due to severe burns.
The wreck was cleared about an hour after the accident.
The TPMO said that the blaze was probably caused by faulty wiring in the jeep.
Investigators are now determining charges to be filed against Regidor for the accident.
