MANILA, Philippines — A police officer who was about to execute a search warrant with a team coming from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), was shot dead by the suspect in Antipolo, Rizal, on Monday afternoon, the police reported.
Superintendent Rodino Elfa, the Antipolo police chief, said Police Officer 3 Cornello Berana died at the Marikina Valley Medical Center after sustaining a gunshot wound in the chest.
Police shot the suspect, Edelburge Limin, in the leg and disarmed him.
Elfa said the killing happened around 1:30 p.m. in Ponte Verde Royale Subdivision in Barangay (village) Cupang, Antipolo City.
After securing a search warrant from the local court, a CIDG team led by Chief Inspector Eduard Mallo went to the robbery suspect’s house to carry out the warrant.
“(Limin) was involved in a string of robbery cases in Marikina City. The CIDG in Rizal has been following up the case,” Elfa said over the phone.
According to initial investigation, the CIDG team appeared in front of the suspect’s house to implement the warrant when the suspect suddenly shot the policeman.
Other members of the CIDG fired back and shot the suspect in the leg.
The suspect confined at the Amang Rodriguez Hospital will be charged at the city prosecutor’s office and detained at the Antipolo police station.
