Young man hurt in Dumanjug attack

A 20-YEAR-OLD man was wounded when a group of armed men waylaid him while he was driving a motorcycle in barangay Kang-actol, Dumanjug town, southern Cebu.

Police said gang rivalry was the motive in the shooting of David Quirante Jr.

Police said one of the assailants was Quirante’s cousin identified as Bobby dela Cerna, 27.

Dela Cerna is a member of a group headed by Leomar Angana, 25, whose group is in conflict with Quirante’s group.

Police said the assailants apparently waited for Quirante to pass in barangay Kang-actol yesterday morning.

Quirante told police that he saw his cousin draw a pistol and shot him. Dela Cerna’s five cohorts, including Angana, also fired shots.

The assailants were armed with short and long firearms, Quirante said.

Quirante sped off after hearing bursts of gunfire and escaped with only a graze wound in the left foot.

Quirante reported the attack to the Dumanjug police precinct.

SPO2 Florencio Clarion of the Dumanjug police precinct said Angana is facing a frustrated murder case for allegedly shooting a member of Quirante’s group in the town’s plaza a few months ago.  He is out on bail.

Police said Angana is facing separate charges for frustrated murder, illegal possession of firearms and drug charges.

Dela Cerna has a pending arrest warrant in Argao town for a murder case, police said.

Police said several operations to arrest Dela Cerna were carried out but he continued to elude arrest./CORRESPONDENT CHRISTINE EMILY L. PANTALEON
